What Does CEREC Actually Stand For?
CEREC refers to a specific chairside CAD/CAM system — Computer-Aided Design and Computer-Aided Manufacturing — that allows a dentist to digitally scan a prepared tooth, design a crown on a computer, and mill the finished crown from a solid ceramic block, all without sending anything to an outside lab.
How Does the Same-Day Process Work?
After your tooth is prepared, similar to preparation for a traditional crown, a digital scanner captures a precise 3D image of your tooth, replacing the need for traditional impression putty. Software is then used to design the crown to fit your specific tooth and bite. A small in-office milling machine carves the crown from a solid ceramic block based on that digital design, and once it's finished and polished, your dentist cements it in place, all within the same appointment.
How Long Does the Whole Visit Take?
